Canon film cameras

I currently shoot only digital, but I'm thinking about getting a cheap Canon EOS film body like an Elan 7 to play around with. I want to get nice full frame shots without spending $$$ a 5D2 and I'd like it to be mostly compatible with my current Canon system. Does anyone here still use film or remember much about the Canon film lineup? I've read reviews, but was hoping someone here would have some input. Thanks!

I have a Canon Elan 35mm - it's a wonderful camera! I haven't used it it years though. Have you considered maybe picking up an original Canon 5D? The prices for the 5D (used) have come down quite a bit and it's a splendid camera. I think you could snatch one up for about $1000. I realize that's a chunk of change, but it might be worth considering.

I thought about a 5D1, but my next digital camera will probably be a 60D so I can do multicam video work. The main reason I want the full frame is for some traveling I'm planning to do this summer, but I wouldn't use it for work. Have you tried any of the IS Canon lenses or EX model speedlights on your Elan? Also, does it have split screen focus?

I am sorry for the delayed response to your question Michael. No, I haven't tried any of the newer Canon equipment with my Elan. Also, I am not sure about the split screen focus. I will try to dig the camera out and take a look - it's been so long since I have even touched it!

Update:
After a lot of research and ebay-ing, I ended up getting a Canon 650. It came with a old EF 35 - 80 mm lens and a 430 EZ flash for $43 shipped. I just ran my first roll of film through it, I'll post images once I scan it.

As for compatibility, all of my current EF lenses work just fine with it. I haven't tried any lighting with it yet, more posts will be forthcoming as my adventure back into the world of film continues.
