Advanced assignments are for photographers want to push the boundries and challenge their skills at a moderate to advanced level.

This is an image processing challenge. Below are three Raw images taken of a scene on a tripod at varying exposures. Some of the problems with these images include:

The images are dull and lack vibrancy.
The dynamic range of the scene is very extreme resulting in the images being over/under exposed.
There is lens flare in the bottom left corner of the image.

You can pick one image from the set and process it alone or use all three. You are free to process the image with any tools you have at your disposal. Your challenge is to process this image and then briefly describe the process and tools you used and why you used them. This assignment runs for a full month - closing at the end of the day on March, 31 2011.

All three Raw images are available for download here (32.7 MB zip file). (http://www.paxtonprints.com/extras/Advanced-Assignment-March-2011.zip)

Here's my first go at it.. didn't have much time to play around with it since I was on my lunch break. I'll probably try again later.

Nice work! I love the vibrancy and contrast - very well done. What process/programs did you use?

Thanks Steve. I used Photomatix to merge the photos and used a bunch of plugins in CS5. Some of which were Topaz adjust, Nik Color efex pro, Nik Silver Efex pro 2, onOne Photo tools, and some levels/burning/cloning.

btw.. looks like your sensor might need to be cleaned. :)

Might be a little over processed looking...

I am glad you jumped in on this one Tim! Your image is processed pretty hard - but the HDR feel to it is pretty cool. I love high contrast images. What did you use to process it?

Photoshop HDR merge. Then played with some different layers, High pass, saturation, etc. Then dodging and burning in areas of the barn and grass.

Try #2. A little softer, but still unique :D

Nice work Tim. Of the three I think I like the first one the most. The lens flare is a nice addition.

Interesting effect in the second image Tim. I like how you changed the sky.
